More people use portable navigation devices (PNDs) than in-dash navigation systems, but users of in-dash systems use their system more often, according to a U.S. consumer survey released by Navteq.

Digital map provider Navteq today announced a new technology agreement that will allow the company to more rapidly deploy innovative collection capabilities and accelerate the collection, creation, and storage of 3D map data and visuals. Navteq and Microsoft have agreed to work together to support technological advancements in this area, through which Navteq will also provide Microsoft Corp. with 3D map data and visuals to power new mapping features.

And the latest GPS device maker to release its own iPhone app is Magellan. They’ve announced Magellan RoadMate turn-by-turn navigation application, alongside a “new innovative vehicle mounting cradle for the iPhone and iPod touch devices” that will be available later in December.

Search-and-rescue application Osmógrafo won the Galileo Master prize of the 2009 European Satellite Navigation Competition October 21 at an awards ceremony at Munich Residence in Germany. Eight special topic prizes and 17 regional honors were awarded along with the €20,000 grand prize, all of which are designed to recognize the best GNSS application innovations of the year.

LBS activity seems to be growing in Europe. Nokia, along with its Navteq subsidiary, is leaning forward to introduce location-based social networking applications on Facebook. In another event, such companies as Navigon and Garmin are rolling out new connected personal navigation devices (PNDs) in Europe — even though many in the industry think that technology isn’t a moneymaker in North America.

As part of the agreement McDonald’s Europe has provided NAVTEQ with location information for more than 5,500 of its restaurants in 16 countries, including an indication of where drive-in facilities are available.

Digital map provider Navteq has launched Navteq Traffic in Europe. Navteq Traffic delivers a single source solution enabling drivers uninterrupted traffic information when crossing borders in 11 countries including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. Navteq Traffic will also be available in Luxembourg and The Netherlands by the end of 2009.
